Dragon Warrior

O.k., let's jump back to the 8 bit challenge for a sec...
Dragon Warrior was the first RPG I played on the NES and was always a favorite childhood game of mine. Although the original Japanese version (Dragon Quest) was visually designed by Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z) I was introduced to the Dragon Warrior world by the visualization of Katsuya Terada and Shuji Imai (Who also drew the "Howard and Nester" comic strip) through their illustrations in the pages of Nintendo Power. I though it was cool that I rediscovered these artists as I got older and liked them just as much, if not more.

Hah, that's awesome. I love the little devious guy with the hat in the background.

Great piece, the composition is working great and the color choices separate the foreground and background elements nicely. I really like the subtle use of the halftone for a little texture. Are the helmets suppose to be part of the ground plane or a decorative element? Just seems to want to be either or, since they're both in the corners.

very tight, I like the Nintendo Power-esque zipitone effect

Heh, finally, someone who gets it! :) You should google up Ketsuya Terada sometime...he's got a pretty dark style. Amazing that his work was plastered throughout Nintendo Power in it's early days. He did the chapter title pages in the Ninja Gaiden II strategy guide. Amazing stuff.
